Dr. Rhoades dissertation research (1976) was titled Guestworkers and Germans: The Anthropology of Migration and was one of the first studies of intra-European migration. In the study, he focused on Spanish and Turkish migrants in Germany and their return to and impacts on their home communities. In 1979, Dr. Rhodes was awarded a National Science Postdoctoral Fellowship to study the application of the guestworker program and policies to Mexican immigration to the USA. In recent years, he and Dr. Virginia Nazarea have received grants to study introduced germplasm by Vietnamese immigrants and refugees to the US. He is also instrumental in starting an interdisciplinary collaborative research group at the University of Georgia to carry out research for immigration policy in the US South.
