Dr. Robert E. Rhoades, Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Georgia-Athens, is widely regarded as one of the founders of the field of agricultural anthropology. His career in both academic and applied anthropology has spanned more than 30 years during which he has written over 130 publications and received numerous honors for his efforts. 	Historical Ecology (ANTH4010/6010): is a hands-on class in pioneer living held mainly at Dr. Rhoades's farm "Agrarian Connections" in Olgethorpe County, Georgia. It explores the principles of human impact through time on ecological landscapes and how these principles can guide contemporary and future communities in the design of sustainable livelihood systems. Mountain Anthropology: Having worked in and written extensively on comparisons of human adaptation in mountain areas, Dr. Rhoades is considered one of the pioneers in this area. World Geography of the Peanut : is a research and information initiative aimed at understanding and disseminating information on peanut production and utilization systems around the world through systematic research and publication .... read more>

Southern Seed Legacy : is an initiative to conserve heirloom seeds, memories, and knowledge of the southern US. This project is housed at the Ethnoecology/Biodiversity Lab and also related to the Agrarian Connection Farm, which is a 312 acre worn-out cotton farm in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Over the past decade, Dr. Rhoades and his students have been restoring the farm and recreating historical landscapes. In addition to the Southern Seed Legacy, the farm also supports the Georgia Log Cabin Project which aims to find, document, and save Georgia's log cabins. To date, seven cabins and structures have been moved to the farm and four more are presently being relocated. Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources in the Andes (Formerly the SANREM Andes Project): Over the past 10 years (1994-04), Dr. Rhoades has led a multi-disciplinary team which examines agricultural and environmental issues at the landscape-scale in the Andes, especially into two Ecuadorian sites (see Cotacachi-SANREM site). Anthropology of Migration: Dr. Rhoades has a long-standing interest in international migration. He studied foreign workers in Germany in the 1970s and documented their return to Spain and Turkey.
